The mayor of Hamburg made false statements about the vaccinated proportion of corona infections
In Hamburg, inquiries from the FDP and the Left to the Senate revealed that the vaccination status of over 80 percent of the newly infected unvaccinated people reported is actually unknown. As the responses from the state government show, 22.5 percent of new infections in the 45th calendar week were due to vaccinated people and 14.3 percent to unvaccinated people. The vaccination status was unknown in 63.2 percent of the cases. Apparently, Hamburg also counted all cases with an unknown vaccination status to the unvaccinated incidence.
These numbers are particularly striking because the Mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher (SPD), announced in a press release on November 16 that over 90 percent of new infections in the unvaccinated were said to have occurred in the week in question. Tschentscher had spoken of a “very clear picture” and showed the journalists present a graphic on which a seven-day incidence of 22 among those who had been vaccinated was compared with an incidence of 605 among those who had not been vaccinated. For months, the SPD mayor has justified the strict 2G regulations in his state with the dramatically higher incidence values of unvaccinated compared to vaccinated. Hamburg was the first federal state to introduce strict 2G rules even before the federal decision.
Although it has now come to light that the unvaccinated incidence values were grossly distorted and clearly presented too high, an improvement in the data situation is not to be expected. According to information from the Infection Epidemiological Center in Hamburg, the vaccination status of newly infected people has been recorded less and less since the end of August. In the 35th calendar week, the vaccination status was known in 68.3 percent of the cases, in the 49th week it was only around 10 percent. However, all reports with an unknown vaccination status were still assigned to the unvaccinated.
At the request of Welt, Senate spokesman Marcel Schweitzer explained these data gaps with the increasingly tense corona situation. Schweitzer: "Due to the increased incidence of infections, the information on the vaccination status can sometimes only be entered with a considerable delay." Since the health authorities are increasingly burdened and can no longer collect data, the separate reporting of incidences according to vaccination status has now been completely stopped. At the request of the left-wing health politician Deniz Celik, the Senate also admitted that the vaccination status of patients in hospitals is only recorded in around two thirds of the cases.
