Germany: Radical Leftists calling for insurrection amidst epidemic

A German Leftist group has been calling for insurrection as the authorities struggle to deal with the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic.

The website Indymedia, which has been classified by the German government as a Leftist extremist group, published a call for rebellion, looting, and attacks on the electrical grid in an attempt to disrupt German productivity while the security services are preoccupied with the effects of the outbreak, according to a report by Der Tagesspiegel.

“We are attempting to make our own revolutionary contribution to the outbreaks of rage, anger, protests, looting, and riots,” a writer using the name “Anticalypse” said in the missive, which was posted on Tuesday.

Indymedia is regarded as one of the main portals for violent Leftist extremists in Germany. In 2018 the Ministry of the Interior banned another site that was part of the Indymedia collective for being unconstitutional, although they have since conceded that the ban was ineffective to stop the group.

The German Left has already shown that it isn’t only about talk when it comes to such threats. In September, Leftist extremists attacked electrical cables serving public transport, which forced a shutdown of some S-Bahn and regional rail traffic for a time. Such groups also participated in riots at the time of the G-20 summit in Hamburg in July 2017. Therefore, the German authorities are taking the radicals’ threats very seriously.

The security services fear that the extremists will wait until public order has grown weaker before they strike.

It is believed that the calls for violence during the epidemic first appeared in a pamphlet issued by Italian Left-wing extremists. It then reached Indymedia through Greek Leftists, according to Der Tagesspiegel.

German Leftist extremists have also sometimes expressed support for jihadi violence, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.
