Public service: Esken wants bans on AfD members

BERLIN. The SPD chairwoman Saskia Esken has called for a ban on AfD members in the public service. Last week the Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the right wing of the AfD as an observation case. The authority justified the step with the fact that the internal party formation pursued extreme right-wing aspirations and had gained influence.

Esken's party colleague, Johannes Kahrs, a member of the Bundestag, spoke out in favor of removing AfD members from public service. "The AfD is the political arm of the murdering terrorists. For AfD members in the public service, we need bans on the job, ”he wrote on Twitter.

Pazderski demands transparency from the “wing”

The CDU member of the Bundestag Patrick Sensburg also expressed doubts about the constitutional loyalty of AfD members and their sympathizers. "Since the extremist wing of the AfD is now shaping the party, the employers will in the near future look at every official who is in the AfD or who sympathizes openly with the AfD."

The classification of the "wing" as an observation case had also caused discussions in the AfD. The chairman of the AfD parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives, Georg Pazderski, appealed to the members of the group to disclose their structures. Only through full transparency will it be possible to end the surveillance by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, he said on Twitter.

From the perspective of the Rhineland-Palatinate AfD parliamentary group leader Uwe Junge, the "wing" must "to protect the party as a whole" say who belongs to him. There are said to be around 7,000 party members, whose leading figures include the Thuringian AfD leader Björn Höcke. (ag)
