Berlin: Syrian refugee arrested on suspicion of terrorism


BERLIN. The Berlin police have arrested a Syrian refugee who is believed to be linked to an Islamist terrorist organization. The 21-year-old man is accused of being a member of the "Ahrar al-Sham" association and of having fought for it in his home country, the Berlin attorney general said on Twitter.

The migrant is said to have fought against Russian troops in Syria for several months as a youth in the summer of 2013. He is said to have been armed with a Kalashnikov type assault rifle and also fired with it. Therefore, she is now examining a possible involvement in murder, manslaughter and war crimes, the public prosecutor said, according to the Berliner Zeitung.

The young man was assigned to a refugee shelter in northwest Brandenburg. But he lives in Berlin and regularly collects money from the job center there. The 21-year-old said during an appointment there that he wanted to travel back to Syria to fight for IS.
