Man attacks people with knife in Frankfurt

A man with a knife attacked and wounded at least three people in the city of Frankfurt on Tuesday morning before he was detained by authorities.

Frankfurt police said in a tweet that none of the victims had life-threatening injuries. They did not release any details about the attacker nor did they say how many people were injured.

Local broadcaster Hessenschau reported that the incident took place near the city's main train station and that the victims were taken to nearby hospitals.

According to witnesses, the man apparently chose his victim and then stabbed her. They were immediately taken to surrounding hospitals. The police do not rule out that there may be other injured people who have gone to a clinic themselves.

"The exact circumstances of the crime are currently the subject of the investigation. There is no longer any danger. More information will follow."

Police are continuing to question witnesses.

The motives of the crime are not yet known, but it is not thought to be either terror related or politically motivated.

Germany has been on high alert after a spate of attacks in recent years.

In 2020, two attacks took place.

The most recent occured on October 4, where one person was killed and another seriously injured in a knife attack in Dresden city centre. The perpetrator was arrested.

On February 19 two mass shootings targetted shisha bars in Hanau.

Eleven people were killed, including the suspect, and five others were injured.
