Weather with migration background in Germany

“Ahmet”, “Goran” or “Chana”: In the first few weeks of 2021, names with a migration background will often appear on the weather map. With the “Weather Correction” campaign, the New German Media Makers (NdM) network wants to make diversity more visible to the public. To this end, the association has bought 14 sponsorships for high and low pressure areas - which justifies the assignment of the name.

"Making the weather more diverse is just a symbolic step," said NdM chairman Ferda Ataman. “It is important that social diversity finally becomes normal, everywhere.” The organization advocates diversity in the media sector and, together with partners from Switzerland and Austria, calls for non-white people to be shown for every topic and every program.

The organizations are also proposing a quota for journalists from immigrant families of 30 percent by 2030. According to the information, the proportion of media workers with a migration background in Germany is estimated at 5 to 10 percent. In the population as a whole, however, one in four has a migration background, i.e. was either not born with German citizenship or has at least one parent who does.

This is what NdM could come up with after receiving 1.4 million euros in 2020.
