Berlin's Office for the Protection of the Constitution is targeting Covid protests

Berlin - The Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the protest movement against the Covid measures as a suspected case. This means that the authority is now able to observe the groups using intelligence services such as recruiting informants or monitoring communications, reports the ARD capital studio, citing security circles.

According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, there are sufficient indications that the protest movement is pursuing anti-constitutional goals. Right-wing extremists and so-called Reich citizens also took part in the demonstrations against the Covid measures. But they would not have a controlling influence on the overall protests.

According to the report, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the alliance around the Lateral Thinking movement (Querdenken) as a new form of extremism. You don't fit into the previous categories. As the rbb writes, the phenomenon is seen as an outlet for people who have not trusted political institutions and the media for a long time.

Observe other countries too
It is therefore unclear which parts of the movement are precisely observed. Since the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is already observing right-wing extremists, it stands to reason that there are other actors and groups in the Lateral Thinking movement.

The Baden-Württemberg Office for the Protection of the Constitution had previously announced that it would be monitoring the umbrella organization “Querdenken 711”. Bavaria and Hamburg also classified the protests as suspected cases.

In the past few months, the political demands had increased that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution should take stronger action against the anti-Covid protests. Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) even warned of the emergence of a new terrorist Covid-RAF, in reference to the Red Army Faction, a West German far-left militant organization founded in 1970.
