Mühlheim / Ruhr - After the life-threatening attack on a pensioner, the police arrested a Lebanese man in Mülheim an der Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia. Because of a mental illness, he was placed in a psychiatric ward, the police said at the weekend.

The 36-year-old foreigner attacked the pensioner on a bike path on Friday and inflicted "severe facial injuries" on him. The 80-year-old victim has been in hospital since then.

Lebanese is known to the police
The German pensioner was also unable to be questioned on Tuesday, reported the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. A representative of the public prosecutor told the newspaper that the man was probably a random victim of the attacker.

In the meantime it became known that the Lebanese suspect had already been suspected by the police several times in the past few weeks. Among other things, we were concerned with dangerous bodily harm and threats.

Two years ago, the city in the Ruhr area hit the headlines because of a gang rape. At that time, five Bulgarian youths molested a young woman. Three of them were sentenced to prison and suspended sentences in 2020.
