Hungary's Foreign Minister: EU bureaucrats live on another planet

Tallinn - Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó (Fidesz) has criticized the EU's stance on the construction of border fences. When he hears how politicians in Brussels oppose fortifications at the external borders, he wonders “whether these people live on another planet,” he said at a meeting of several countries in Estonia on Wednesday.

Hungary stands behind the Baltic states and Poland, who are fighting against illegal migration. The immigrants broke the law and violated European values. Nevertheless, the EU is willing to accept them. “If we don't defend ourselves, nobody will defend us,” warned Szijjártó.

EU does not want to finance border fences
More and more migrants are trying to get illegally from Belarus to Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. The federal states had reacted to this with increased border controls and the construction of a fortification extending hundreds of kilometers.

Lithuania's President Gitanas Nauseda and other member states, including Austria and Denmark, also called on the EU to participate at least partially in the construction of such fences. However, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen refused.
