Liverpool suicide bomber was a Jordanian asylum seeker
The asylum seeker converted from Islam to Christianity in 2017. What drove him to the act is currently puzzling the security authorities. He had no contact with Islamist terror groups. In 2014, the authorities rejected an application for asylum because of doubts about his identity, and he also threatened people with a knife. According to the news portal Mail Online, he was admitted to a psychiatric facility for several months.
Investigators rated the incident as a planned terrorist attack. The destination may have been Liverpool Cathedral, where Remembrance Day for British soldiers who fell in wars took place on Sunday. At the time of the explosion late Sunday morning, around 1,200 military personnel, veterans and their families were on site.
Taxi driver locked the suicide bomber in the car
The alleged terrorist had chosen a taxi to get there. Since the driver thought the man looked suspicious, he stopped the car and locked the Jordanian in it before he blew himself up.
The taxi driver was injured and was able to get to safety and after a short treatment he was released from the hospital. Apart from the assassin, no one was killed.
Security forces arrested four people between the ages of 20 and 29 in Liverpool on Sunday and Monday. After the first questioning, they were released again. Because of the attack, Great Britain raised its terror warning level to the second highest level. The authorities now assessed the terrorist threat as "serious".
It was not until October that the allegedly Islamist-motivated murder of Tory MP David Amess rocked England. He was stabbed in a church. According to the police, the suspect was a 25-year-old man with a British passport. According to media reports citing police information, it is a Muslim of Somali origin.
