Pope criticizes handling of migrants on Lesbos

Athens - On the occasion of his visit to two migrant camps on the Greek island of Lesbos, Pope Francis denounced the way in which the immigrants living there were treated. "I ask you, let's stop this shipwreck of civilization," said the head of the Catholic Church on Sunday at a sermon in Mytilene.

Migration is a world problem and a humanitarian crisis that concerns everyone. At the moment, however, the problem is not being adequately addressed. Little has changed since his last visit to the migrant camps on the island of Lesbos.

Pope Francis: Nationalism has catastrophic consequences
The "constant shifting of responsibility" must stop. "The migration issue must not always be delegated to others, as if it did not affect anyone and as if it were just a useless burden that someone is forced to take on," warns the Pope, according to the Vatican.

EU citizens lived in an "era of barbed wire", in which the construction of border fortifications was seen as a solution to the migration crisis. History has shown the disastrous consequences of isolation and nationalism.

The Mediterranean turns into a "cold cemetery without tombstones"
The Mediterranean is considered to be the "cradle of numerous civilizations". At the moment, however, it is turning into a “cold cemetery without tombstones” and a “mirror of death”.

On Friday, Francis announced that he would take 50 migrants with him to Rome from his visit to Cyprus. He wants to send a signal to the EU to reconsider the current immigration policy.
