Orbán triumphs in parliamentary elections and taunts Brussels

Budapest - The party of Hungary's Prime Minister Victor Orbán has clinched a clear victory in the Hungarian parliamentary elections. After counting more than 95 percent of the votes, his Fidesz received 53 percent of the votes cast. An alliance of six opposition parties received around 35 percent.

Also represented in parliament is the right-wing Mi Hazánk (“Our Homeland”) party, which received around six percent of the vote. With 135 of 199 seats in parliament, Orbán's party can once again build on a two-thirds majority.

In his fourth electoral success in a row, the Hungarian head of government was confronted with a closed opposition bloc for the first time, which included socialists, liberals, greens, conservatives and the right-wing Jobbik party.

Orbán: Election victory can also be seen from Brussels
Orbán was pleased with the result of the election. "It's looking good for us. Maybe we're better than ever," he told his supporters just before midnight. “We won a huge election! So powerful that it can still be seen from the moon, but definitely from Brussels,” stressed the Fidesz boss.

In the last election campaign, the winner of the election had primarily focused on the topic of energy prices. Orbán strictly rejected a gas embargo against Russia and arms deliveries to Ukraine. He accused the opposition of wanting to draw Hungary into the war in Ukraine.
