Russia stops gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria

In addition to Poland, Bulgaria will apparently no longer be supplied with gas from Russia as of Wednesday.

Sofia - The Bulgarian Energy Ministry announced on Tuesday evening that the Bulgarian energy company Bulgargaz had received a corresponding notification from the Russian Gazprom. "The Bulgarian side has fully fulfilled its obligations and made all payments required under the agreement in a timely manner, accurately and in accordance with the agreements," the Energy Ministry in Sofia said. The Russian side had previously proposed a new two-stage process for paying for gas.

According to the release, Bulgargaz had come to the conclusion in an analysis that the payment terms demanded by Moscow were not compatible with the contracts that were in place until the end of the year and posed "significant risks for Bulgaria", including that risk of not receiving gas after payments made. Measures for an alternative gas supply have already been taken, the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy said, without giving any details. It had previously become known that Gazprom was also stopping gas supplies to Poland.

Here, too, the reason was that Warsaw refused to make the payments in rubles.
