German Employment Agency warns of worsening shortage of skilled workers - The solution is more immigration

The outgoing head of the Federal Employment Agency (BA), Detlef Scheele, warns of a further worsening of the shortage of skilled workers in Germany.

Nuremberg - "By 2040, around nine million more workers will leave the labor market than will enter," he told the Augsburger Allgemeine. According to the IAB Institute, annual net immigration of around 400,000 people is necessary to compensate for this. In 2020 it was only 220,000.

"So we need more immigration," says Scheele. "This is the only way we can compensate for the shortage of workers and skilled workers." Scheele has been Chairman of the BA since 2017. Former Labor Minister Andrea Nahles will take office on August 1st.
