Germany: Integration commissioner wants to abolish work bans

The federal government's integration commissioner, Reem Alabali-Radovan (SPD), promises refugees quick access to work and education.

Berlin - That should not only apply to people from Ukraine, said the SPD politician to the Frankfurter Rundschau (Wednesday edition). "I work to ensure that integration is made possible for everyone from the start," says Alabali-Radovan. "We notice with the refugees from the Ukraine that because they have a work permit right from the start, German companies approach them very differently."

And they themselves knew that they were allowed to work. Germany also wants to learn from these experiences with regard to refugees from other countries. "We must now start the abolition of work bans and chain toleration."

It's about opportunities and participation for everyone. "Because refugees from other regions also want to participate, learn German and work." And it is neither humane nor sensible to force refugees to sit around, said the integration officer.

Alabali-Radovan added: "I know from many conversations with refugees - but also with volunteers and full-time helpers - about the great concern that refugees do not feel treated equally." Many have the feeling that they have to take very high hurdles and now see that there could be another way. "That can lead to divisions. This concern drives me."
