Hungary opposes oil embargo

The Hungarian government has spoken out against an oil and gas embargo against Russia. A spokesman told Reuters news agency that Hungary had not changed its mind on the issue. If this veto is retained, a complete import ban would be off the table.

Most recently, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) called for a stop to Russian oil supplies. "We are also promoting within the EU to now go together as Europe to phase out oil in the sixth EU sanctions package," she said on the ARD program "Anne Will".
EU countries fear rising consumer prices

The EU think tank Bruegel estimates that before the war Russia imported oil worth 450 million euros into the EU every day, as reported by ZDF "Heute". Of this, Germany covered about a third of its oil needs. In the meantime, the value has been reduced to twelve percent, said Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens).

In addition to Hungary, other EU countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain are also skeptical about an oil boycott. They fear that consumer prices will continue to rise as a result. Even if an embargo is decided, it is still completely unclear when the measures will take effect.

Sanctions to the last Russian soldier
Due to the sanctions and the war, Baerbock expects that Russia will not get back on its feet "for years". "Through the sanctions, we will ensure that further military action in other regions by Russian forces alone is not possible in the next few years," hopes the minister.

Baerbock wanted "that Russia never again wages a war of aggression that violates international law". The sanctions would not be lifted until all Russian troops were withdrawn from Ukraine. She praised previous German governments for sticking to the sanctions that have been in place since 2014.
