Federal government continues to bring hundreds of Afghans to Germany

Berlin - Even ten months after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, the German government flies hundreds of Afghans to Germany every month. On average, "about 200 Afghans per week are brought to Germany from Pakistan alone," the Foreign Office said when asked by the newspapers of the Funke Media Group. These were people who were being persecuted by the new rulers and were former local Bundeswehr personnel, as well as their relatives.

In the past few months, German visa offices have issued "more than 18,000 visas for local staff, particularly vulnerable people who have received approval from the federal government, and their family members". Since the beginning of the year, around 5,000 people without passports have been helped on their journey to Germany within two months.

Tens of thousands of Afghans apply for asylum
In countries neighboring Afghanistan, thousands are still waiting to get an entry permit. According to the federal government, there are 3,455 Afghans in Islamabad, Pakistan, and around 1,500 Afghans in Delhi, India. For faster processing of applications, the time-consuming document review process is no longer necessary.

At the end of February, the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced that around 30,000 Afghans in Germany were waiting for their asylum applications to be processed at the beginning of the year. After western troops left the country on the Hindu Kush in August 2021, there was a wave of refugees. Germany is one of the most important destination countries for Afghans. As of December 31, 2020, more than 271,000 Afghan nationals resided in the country. Thousands more have been added over the past year. Significantly more than half of them were not gainfully employed, according to a study by the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Promotion (IAB) of the Federal Employment Agency based in Nuremberg last autumn.
