Ukraine's ex-president Poroshenko recommends Merkel as a role model

Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko suggests that Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) take a cue from former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) when dealing with Russia.

Berlin/Kyiv - "Ukraine is very interested in a German leadership role, as Chancellor Merkel showed at the time," Poroshenko told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday editions). Merkel spoke harshly to Putin. "Few are able to talk to Putin like the chancellor did."

He very much appreciates the economic support that Germany is now providing with Scholz. "But when you're at war, you can never get enough weapons. That's why I'm not satisfied with the arms deliveries from Germany," stressed Poroshenko.

The head of the Ukrainian opposition party European Solidarity made an urgent appeal to the federal government to expand its aid. "It's not just about the future of Ukraine, but also the future of Germany, Europe and the world. And that future depends on the delivery of 500 tanks, 1,000 artillery systems, 100 fighter jets and 300 anti-aircraft missiles," he said.

"Anyone who supplies these weapons is not helping Ukraine, they are investing in their own security." Poroshenko implored the federal government: "Please help us to save you. War on Ukrainian territory is better for you than if war comes to Germany."

The ex-president also called for tightening sanctions against Russia. "It is also time to block all exports from Russia - and to stop financial support for parties and other organizations in Russia," said Poroshenko. "Russia receives 500 billion dollars a year to finance the war against Ukraine. I say: stop it!" Poroshenko emphasized: "The more weapons are delivered to Ukraine, the shorter the path to peace. We can stop Putin - if we have enough weapons. The point is to liberate Europe from Putin."
