Germany: Linguists call for an end to gender ideology in broadcasting

Berlin -A group of 80 linguists has reminded the public service broadcasters (ÖRR) of the obligation to express itself in texts and formulations free of ideology. This is not given with the use of gender-neutral language.

The scientists see a need for action, especially since the use of gender-neutral language has “considerably” increased since 2020. They therefore call for "a critical reassessment of language use in the ÖRR on a linguistic basis". The fee-financed broadcasters should adhere to applicable language norms and deal responsibly with language as a cultural asset. Gender ideology is not one of them.

Incorrect spelling does not correspond to the order
Surveys have repeatedly shown that three quarters of readers, listeners and viewers clearly prefer their usual language without asterisks, gender gaps or capital letters.

The group, which is still collecting more signatures, refers to a decision by the Council for German Spelling from March 2021, which clearly states that these special characters do not correspond to the official set of rules, as they impair comprehensibility, clarity and legal certainty. Disregarding the requirements of the Spelling Council is not compatible with the valid media state treaty and the broadcaster's educational mandate, the appeal says. Instead of being a role model, the ÖRR practices "ortographic freedom beyond the binding rules".
