Katrin Göring-Eckardt: In order to save the climate, the current crisis is “only the beginning”

Berlin - Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt described the "necessary restrictions due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine" as "only the beginning". With reference to rising energy prices and gas shortages, the Green politician told t-online: "The climate crisis will require us to have many more restrictions."

The 56-year-old warned that Germany should already prepare for even more savings: “Companies must check whether they can turn down the heating and air-conditioning systems in offices and workshops. The same applies to public buildings, golf clubs or water parks.”

If you live in a large apartment, you should pay more taxes
She also called for a new climate tax, which she called a "justice contract". According to Göring-Eckardt, it cannot be the case that the rich can “make a slender foot” while the state accumulates debt. Therefore, in view of the current crises, these people would have to pay a temporary property levy. Those who cause a particularly large amount of CO2 should be taxed more heavily – for example with a large apartment, two cars or permanent air travel. In the future, it will no longer be possible to separate social justice from climate justice.

The debt brake must also remain suspended, she demanded on the news portal: “We have an emergency situation, not because of one, but several crises. That is why we must also talk about the debt brake. In view of the situation, it is not sustainable.” Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) had previously insisted on complying with the debt brake again next year.
