Abbas relativizes the Holocaust - Scholz stands by and remains silent

Berlin - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas put the Holocaust into perspective during a press conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). When asked if he distanced himself from the Olympic attack by Palestinian terrorists, Abbas replied, according to the Phoenix broadcaster's translator, "Since 1947, Israel has committed 50 massacres in 50 Palestinian villages -- 50 massacres, 50 holocausts."

Scholz did not intervene and ended the press conference after relativizing the Holocaust without going into detail. In the past, German Chancellors have repeatedly pointed out that the Federal Republic bears a historic responsibility towards Israel.

In Germany, the denial and relativization of the mass murder of European Jews is punishable as hate speech and punishable with up to five years in prison.

The background to the question was the 50th anniversary of the Munich Olympics attack. On September 5, 1972, Palestinian terrorists attacked the Israeli crew in their quarters and took them hostage. All eleven Israelis were murdered during the terrorist action, five terrorists died in an attempt to free them, as did a German policeman.
