Germany: "Last Generation" hires full-time employees

An association associated with the "Last Generation" climate group employs activists, some of which are subject to social security contributions, and pays them salaries, for example for lectures.

Berlin - The "Last Generation" should work together with the Berlin association "Wandelbündnis - General Association for Social-Ecological Change", as the Welt am Sonntag reports. Upon request, the association stated that it would not receive any money from the "Last Generation". In the alliance, however, the initiative "Non-profit educational work to support the last generation" is active, which concentrates on educational work around the goals of the last generation, for example with climate lectures.

The "Last Generation" left a question unanswered. In December, according to Welt am Sonntag, the "Last Generation" organized several online seminars to inform interested parties about the possibility of receiving a salary. According to the Welt am Sonntag, the activists described the model in the seminars as donations from supporters.

Among them are private individuals, but above all the US foundation "Climate Emergency Fund". These donations would then be forwarded to the association "Wandelbündnis", which, however, rejects this statement. According to Welt am Sonntag, the association issues employment contracts and enables employment subject to social security contributions and a salary of up to 1,300 euros a month.

"From now on we can employ people subject to social security contributions in 520 euro jobs, part-time and full-time, as well as enable the self-employed/freelancers to work," says the "Last Generation" Signal chat channels. Berlin's Senator for the Interior, Iris Spranger (SPD), is concerned about the professionalization of the group. "This is about a comprehensively organized association of people who commit crimes in order to achieve their political goals," Spranger told the Welt am Sonntag.

The degree of organization is rated as extensive. "And I don't just refer to the coordination of the road blockades, but also the planning and logistics behind it - from fundraising to 'salaries' to paying fines and penalties," says Spranger. The border to "extremism" has not yet been crossed, but these are politically motivated crimes. According to Spranger, the "hard core" of the group in Berlin consists of about 500 people, about half of whom have made several appearances to the police. The CDU member of the Bundestag Philipp Amthor sees the responsibility with the Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD). "Instead of distracting references to the judiciary, the SPD interior minister could take action herself against this spiral of escalation.
