Sweden Has It's Deadliest Year With 60 People Killed In 2022

With 60 people killed in shootings in Sweden since the start of the year, 2022 has become the deadliest year since statistics began in 2016, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported on Sunday (December 11th), citing police statistics.

“This year we have seen a massive increase” in shooting victims, Malm University criminology professor Magnus Gerell told SVT.

“That’s an extremely high number, and it represents a very big increase over recent years. This development is also explained by the fact that more victims (of shootings) are dying,” Gerell said.

He said the vast majority of shootings happen in the criminal world, but the modus operandi and demographics of gangs have changed over the years.

“Today it is more common than before to see more than one shooter, and more shots are being fired. It seems the assassinations are more meticulously planned than before, leading to more deaths,” Gerell said. The previous record was set in 2020 with 47 deaths, according to police statistics.
