"Too scared for jail": Data leak exposes climate gluers extremism in Germany

The climate gluers of the protest group "Last Generation" sometimes caused trouble on Germany's streets - now the chaotic people have stuck one on themselves...

The Welt am Sonntag team came across several Excel lists while researching the organization. In it you can read: sensitive private data such as address and living situation of the members. Free for everyone to see on the internet.

Embarrassing data leak with the climate gluers
In total, the journalists found data from more than 2,200 activists, which was accessible to everyone via the Google Drive cloud service. Only after the Welt am Sonntag submitted a press inquiry to the group did it restrict access for unauthorized persons.

Disturbing: In addition to telephone number, address and Co., everyone whose data was entered in the lists is given a crazy psycho profile. These are sentences such as "Couldn't bring myself to drop my studies so far", "too scared for prison", "not in good health", "depressive phase", or: "fears deportation in the event of an arrest".

Radical: Around 250 people have signaled their willingness to go to prison for the common goal.

When asked about the data protection breach, a press spokeswoman dismisses it. The information there is out of date. And she continued to justify the data collection: “It is now essential that people take to the streets. We are in the middle of a climate catastrophe and the government is doing nothing. People are opting for civil resistance and are willing to put their names to it.”

The Welt am Sonntag team also found out that the self-proclaimed climate rescuers mainly used the data to persuade interested parties to become members by telephone after the group had given presentations.

The internal documents say: "All interested people must be called as soon as possible after the lecture, ideally the number should be added to a chat right at the end of the lecture."

Politicians see this prison readiness data as an indication of the group's criminal background. Alexander Throm, the Union's domestic policy spokesman, says: "The research confirms the suspicion that the 'last generation' is a criminal organization."

The association offers its members a professionalized platform to deliberately commit crimes. "This is criminal and has nothing to do with peaceful protest for climate protection."

For the Berlin lawyer Niko Härting, the leak is like a “data super meltdown”. In terms of data protection law, the published information is part of the “special categories of (sensitive) personal data”, which is subject to increased protection under Art. 9 GDPR. And the data protection declaration on the "last generation" website is also completely inadequate.
