Germany: Rioting Syrian paralyzes rail traffic

Not a nice Sunday for hundreds of travelers heading to Leipzig: A Syrian rioted on the regional train and attacked a passenger. More than 200 passengers have to flee from the apparently mentally ill man.

Magdeburg/Zerbst - On Sunday , the federal police arrested a rioting Syrian in a regional express from Magdeburg to Leipzig. The 27-year-old migrant had, among other things, destroyed glass doors and hit a 33-year-old German in the face. The victim suffered injuries and had to be treated on site by emergency services before being taken to a nearby hospital.

The train driver then stopped the train and locked the doors - around 200 passengers took the opportunity to flee from the violent perpetrator. The railway tracks were closed to subsequent train traffic. The state police arrested the Syrian in Zerbst (Saxony-Anhalt) and handed him over to his federal police colleagues. Due to his health condition, he was admitted to a psychiatric facility, the security authorities said.

Rail attacks are not uncommon
Due to the attack there were several train cancellations. Five trains were also delayed by a total of 126 minutes.

The number of violent acts on trains and at stations has been increasing for several years. In September, at the request of the AfD , the federal government announced that the number of associated violent crimes between January and June of this year had increased by 16.2 percent compared to the same period last year. People without a German passport made up 43.2 percent of the suspects.
