Berlin turns a luxury hotel into an asylum home

With so much tax money, even a luxury hotel in Berlin can't say no. The elegantly furnished luxury hostel on Kurfürstendamm is now becoming a home for asylum seekers.

Berlin - The “Dormero Berlin – Hotel am Ku'damm” has been converted into a home for asylum seekers. Migrants from Islamic countries have now moved into the posh hostel from the Wilhelminian era, where celebrities until recently hosted large celebrations.

This is costing the Berlin Senate a lot of taxpayers' money. The Senate pays 9,462 euros per day for 166 planned asylum seekers. In December alone, the hotel operators, the Wöhrl family, earned 293,322 euros. A sum that would probably not be possible to generate through normal operations. Especially since the money only covers accommodation costs. On top of that, the migrants are provided with full meals.

For this sum, the hotel stopped normal operations, as the BZ reports. There is no sign of this on the website yet. The visitor can still marvel at the magnificently furnished lobby, the luxurious rooms, the chic bar and the classy conference rooms.

Berlin is “ready to accept more people”
These are the rooms where asylum seekers now live. The hotel, which is located near the KaDeWe on Eislebener Straße, has a total of 72 rooms and eight suites. According to the State Office for Refugees, 100 asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey have already moved there. The rest will follow soon.

Berlin has registered as a “safe haven” with the asylum lobby organization “Seebrücke”. The capital, led by Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), is “ready to accept more people”.
