German authorities fear an increase in illegal migration despite border controls

The authorities expect a further increase in illegal migration to Germany.

Berlin - "A renewed increase in the number of police arrests and asylum applications in Germany is to be expected," says a new report from the Joint Analysis and Strategy Center for Illegal Migration (GASIM), about which Der Spiegel reports. Smuggling networks could “advertise” with an almost guaranteed prospect of staying in Germany. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf), the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the Foreign Office are represented in the center. Germany will continue to be the “main destination country for illegal migration within the EU,” according to the analysis. The controls at the German borders, which have recently been extended several times, are by no means met with unanimous approval by the experts.

According to the authorities' assessment, they are "more likely to lead to adjustments to the modi operandi in the future". They are also used by smugglers "to make migrants' (increased) need for support credible and to justify higher costs". According to the report, 39,700 suspected smugglers were counted in Germany in 2023. That was 119 percent more than in the previous year.

42 percent of the smugglers apprehended by the authorities reached the Federal Republic via Poland, 29 percent via Austria and 23 percent via the Czech Republic. In 2023, smuggling in vans or vehicles - so-called container smuggling - was particularly significant. “In this context, more than 1,200 cases involving around 17,500 people were identified,” the report says. The number of cases has therefore more than doubled compared to the previous year, and the number of people smuggled has “almost quadrupled”.
