Steinmeier's ex-speaker becomes deputy head of the ARD capital studio

Remoteness from the state is one of the core principles of public broadcasting. Nevertheless, leading journalists happily switch back and forth between the broadcasters and the politicians' press offices. A current case leads to German President Steinmeier and the ARD.

Berlin - The former spokeswoman for German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Anna Engelke, will become deputy head of the ARD capital studio from July 1st. The directors of ARD agreed to a corresponding proposal from Südwestrundfunk and Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, the broadcaster announced on Thursday . The journalist worked for Steinmeier from March 2017 to March 2022 and most recently worked for NDR.

Engelke will moderate the “Report from Berlin” from summer onwards, alternating with the future studio manager Markus Preiß and the other deputy Matthias Deiß. She also takes over the management of the joint radio editorial team in the ARD main studio. The previous director Martin Ganslmeier is moving to the ARD radio studio in New York.

Engelke began her career in the mid-1990s as a trainee at NDR and subsequently worked, among other things, as a correspondent for the station in Bonn, Berlin and Washington DC. She was released from work as spokesperson for the Federal President from 2017 to 2022. She then worked as co-host of the NDR Info podcast “Armed Forces and Strategies”.
