LA Mayor to Spread Coronavirus by Cutting Off Water and Power

We haven't had an actual legal basis for designating some businesses as essential or non-essential. Why is a Thai place essential, but a firearms store, not?

Disregarding minor questions of civil liberties, LA's Mayor Garcetti is going to use the Department of Water and Power as a blunt instrument.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti opened his daily briefing Tuesday recognizing what may have been the first teenage COVID-19 death in L.A. County and went on to announce actions against nonessential businesses that don’t close. 

The mayor went on to announce the “business ambassadors program” — an effort to get nonessential businesses to close.

“This behavior is irresponsible and selfish,” he said of those that remain open.

He said the Department of Water and Power will shut off services for the businesses that don’t comply with the “safer at home” ordinance.

Is cutting off water really a good way to stop the spread of the coronavirus?

The whole point of this exercise was getting people to maintain cleanliness, and now Garcetti wants to punish businesses, their workers, and their customers, that some elements of government decided are not essential, by making it difficult for them to protect themselves.

This is dangerously irresponsible.
