Tension between Turkey and Greece: Erdogan announces his intention to wage war and invade islands in the Aegean
The neighbors Greece and Turkey, in a bitter dispute over gas reserves, have announced rival military maneuvers in the eastern Mediterranean. Greece started an exercise south of the island of Crete. The Turkish Defense Ministry responded by announcing its own maneuver at the same time in the same region.
The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) starts an attempt to mediate in the gas dispute between the two countries. To this end, he travels to Athens and Ankara for talks.
Turkish Foreign Minister and President Erdogan have threatened with the use of direct force against Greece, even the invasion to settle old scores from Ottoman times.

Since the discovery of gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean in the region around Crete and Cyprus, there has been a violent dispute between Ankara and Athens over their exploration and subsequent exploitation. The Turkish approach is also sharply criticized by the EU. France sent warships to the region where Turkey and Greece have expanded their military presence.
