Markus Söder: Bavaria participates in refugee aid
Munich - It was "a Christian duty" to help, he told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Saturday edition). "A big European solution would be best. But it is good that Germany and France are leading the way."
Others should follow. Anything else would be an indictment of humanity in Europe, said Söder. "The Free State of Bavaria will of course take part."
Söder did not commit to a specific number. "We shouldn't have endless debates about numbers now, but rather organize the aid quickly. A new ideological fundamental debate about migration policy in Germany is of little use."
When asked why he, unlike NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU), did not visit Lesbos this year, Söder said: "During the entire Corona period, we did not make a single trip abroad."
