France's interior minister closes mosque in Paris

PARIS. France's Interior Minister GĂ©rald Darmanin has ordered the closure of a mosque in a Paris suburb. The Islamic place of worship shared a video on Facebook in which it denounced the teaching of the murdered teacher Samuel Paty, Darmanin told the TV station TF1, according to the AFP news agency.

The imam of the mosque published the address of the school where Paty worked in the Facebook video. He also called for intimidation of the educator.

The Islamists were "not necessarily connected" to the crime, emphasized Darmanin. The aim of the missions is, however, "to convey a message: not a minute delay for the enemies of the republic". According to the Interior Ministry, 34 police operations against people and associations that are said to be close to the Islamist spectrum took place on Monday.

Paty was beheaded on Friday by an 18-year-old Chechen near a school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris. The perpetrator shouted “Allahu Akbar!”. The history teacher had previously discussed the subject of freedom of expression in his class and also showed Mohammed caricatures.

The family of the perpetrator came to France from Moscow eight years ago and applied for asylum there, reported Emma. They lived with around 60 other families in a Chechen community. One of the men from this group had already killed a man in front of the Paris Opera in 2018 for “Islamist motives” and injured other people.
