EU Home Affairs Commissioner Johansson is concerned about growing numbers of refugees

Home Affairs Commissioner Johansson has expressed concern about the growing number of refugees in the Canary Islands.

The fact that so many people set out on the - quote - "deadliest" refugee route shows how urgently a reform of asylum policy is needed, said Johansson to the German press agency. Anyone who has no right to international protection must be returned. Nevertheless, it is important to preserve the right to asylum.

Almost 14,000 people have come since the beginning of the year
On the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain, the number of arriving migrants has recently increased significantly. Since the beginning of the year, almost 14,000 migrants have come across the Atlantic from Africa in open boats - around seven times as many as in the same period last year.

In September the EU interior commissioner proposed a reform of the asylum and migration policy that had been blocked for years. The EU interior ministers will discuss the plans tomorrow.
