Arson suspected: Big fire broke out in refugee camp on Samos

A major fire broke out on Wednesday in the Vathy registration camp on the Greek island of Samos. That said the mayor of Vathy, Giorgos Stantzos, to Athens TV station Mega. "It is arson," he added.

Household gas bottles exploded in several container apartments. He called on the government in Athens to bring all migrants to the mainland "now". Local media reported that the fire broke out in the camp's kitchens.

Just like in Moria
Around 3,800 people currently live in the Samos camp. That is about six times as much as the storage capacity of the warehouse. Fires broke out in and around this camp several times in the past few months.

In August, a major fire completely destroyed the largest refugee camp in Greece, Moria on the island of Lesbos. Prosecutors have charged five Afghans with arson.
