Greece demands stopping German submarine deliveries to Turkey

Berlin - "Greece is threatened by German weapons in the hands of Turkey," said Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias to Welt am Sonntag. He added: "Do not give Turkey something that can destabilize the entire Eastern Mediterranean. That can create significant problems for the EU and for Germany."

In the eastern Mediterranean, warships from both countries have sailed because Turkey is promoting natural gas production in sea areas to which Greece claims. Ankara has ordered six submarines from the German Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. Greece has four submarine class 214 devices that Ankara is planning to buy.

"If Germany delivers, then Turkey has a strategic advantage over us," said Dendias. Germany had recently tried to mediate in the dispute between Greece and Turkey. But the renewed departure of a Turkish reconnaissance ship shows that Germany's "soft line towards Turkey" has failed, said Dendias.

"I don't like to use the word when it comes to Germany, but unfortunately Berlin's policy towards Ankara can be described as 'appeasement'." The EU must now impose the economic sanctions on Turkey that it threatened at the summit in September.
