Germany's Green leader Baerbock: "Yes, I trust myself to be in the Chancellery"

BERLIN. Green leader Annalena Baerbock considers herself capable of taking over the office of Chancellor after the federal election next year. "Yes, I also trust myself to be the Chancellor," Baerbock told Bild am Sonntag. When asked why she was doing this, the Green politician replied: "The next few years will bring great changes. We have to make our industry climate-neutral, we have to address social inequality."

In return, the Greens, with her and Robert Habeck as chairpersons, bring “the knowledge, the responsibility and the passion”. Who would be the Green Chancellor candidate should be decided in the spring.

She has the necessary nerves, gets by with little sleep and has the necessary psychological and physical strength, explained Baerbock. “Three years as party leader, member of parliament and mother of small children are pretty tough. And for everyone who is currently in the conversation: "Nobody fell from heaven as Chancellor. Everyone would have to learn in office." So far, she has not held a government position. But she brings "international experience and European roots" with her.

Baerbock on Merkel: "I really appreciate her way"
A green politician in the Chancellery would "make policy with foresight, not just start when the going gets tough". It starts with climate policy, financial markets and the EU. "And for health: clinics in rural areas are closing because the financing system has a list. The knee operation brings good money, births less. That has to be different. "

Baerbock also praised Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). “Even if there is a lot of things different from Ms. Merkel in terms of content: I really appreciate the way she is, especially the unpretentious thing that didn't exist before in the Chancellery. Nevertheless I go my own way. As a copy chancellor, nobody can shape it. Every time has its color and personality "

Habeck as finance minister?
The Greens have been in second place behind the Union in polls for months. For some time now, they have been discussing possible government posts after the federal election in September 2021. According to a report by the taz , they want to bring Habeck into play as finance minister. "If we want to play on an equal footing, we need the finance department," an unspecified Green federal politician told the newspaper in November. Several "well networked" Greens confirmed this accordingly. This is the only way to make a lasting difference. Habeck was mentioned as a possible candidate.

The party chairman was in charge of developing a concept for a loosened debt brake. The Greens boss had also been noticed regularly with financial statements in the past few weeks. In an interview with Deutschlandfunk over the weekend, he criticized the SPD chancellor candidate and finance minister Olaf Scholz (SPD), who wants to comply with the debt brake again from 2022.
