Germany is the European leader in asylum applications

In an EU-wide comparison, most asylum applications are made in Germany.

According to a confidential report by the EU Commission, over 26,000 new applications for asylum were made in Germany in the first three months of this year, reports the newspaper Die Welt. In second place in the EU is France with around 20,000 applications, followed by Spain with 13,000. The EU Commission's situation report so far this year has made the fewest applications for asylum in Estonia and Hungary - with 11 and 8 procedures respectively.

Almost half of the applicants in Germany came from Syria, followed by Afghanistan and Iraq. A total of 102,000 asylum applications were submitted in the EU in the first quarter - including Switzerland and Norway. That would be a decrease of more than a third compared to the same period last year. This is mainly due to the Covid pandemic, the EU report concludes.
