More than half of Americans disapprove of Biden’s immigration work: poll
More than half of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s handling of immigration, according to a poll released as chaos continues to reign at the US-Mexico border.
The nationwide NPR/Marist poll surveyed 1,309 adults via phone between March 22 and 25.
While the president cracked the 50-percent mark on his overall approval rating, as well as his handling of the economy and coronavirus pandemic, his grades on immigration remain a vulnerability.
Fifty-three percent of respondents said that they disapprove of Biden’s work on immigration, compared to just 34 percent who approve.
The criticism was not strictly partisan either, as Biden barely earned a passing mark from members of his own party.
Sixty-six percent of respondents who identified as Democrats said they approve of Biden’s immigration work, compared to nearly a quarter, 23 percent, who said they disapprove.
Among respondents who identified as Latino, opinions were evenly split, with 43 percent approving and 43 percent disapproving.
In a separate ABC News/Ipsos poll released earlier this week, Biden fared even worse, with 57 percent of respondents disapproving of his job on immigration.
Since Biden took office in January and began rolling back the previous administration’s more stringent immigration policies, tens of thousands of Central American migrants have flocked to the border.
They include unaccompanied minors, many of whom end up confined to cramped detention centers for days at a time while the feds work to arrange transfer elsewhere.
Despite Biden’s repeated promises that help is coming, the influx has only increased in volume, while the White House response has been marked with confusion over who’s running the show and a lack of transparency unseen in previous administrations, Democratic or Republican.
