The number of Muslims in Germany is growing by almost a million

Berlin - The number of Muslims living in Germany has grown by around 900,000 since 2015. This increased their number to up to 5.6 million, as the study "Muslim Life in Germany 2020" by the research center of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) showed, the results of which were published on Wednesday. According to this, of the 21.3 million inhabitants with a migration background in Germany, around every fourth person is Muslim.

"This is between 6.4 and 6.7 percent of the total population," explained the research assistant at the BAMF research center, Anja Stichs. The increase since 2015 is mainly due to the immigration of people from the crisis regions in the Middle East. These include Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Syria in particular.

Among the Muslims in Germany, Turks were the largest group of origin with a share of 45 percent, followed by migrants from Syria with a share of 13 percent. Almost half of the Muslims now have a German passport. According to the study, 38 percent are exclusively German citizens. Nine percent have German and foreign citizenship.

Religion does not play a role for integration
The study also examined the influence of religion on the successful integration of migrants. According to the study, this is often overestimated. In this context, hardly any differences were found between Muslims and migrants with a different religion. Much more important for success, however, are the length of stay, the reasons for migration or the social situation.

For the study between July 2019 and March 2020, the research center surveyed around 4,500 people from 23 countries of origin with a strong Muslim background.
