UN Security Council demands a Taliban government with women

New York - The UN Security Council has called on the Taliban to form an inclusive government with the participation of women. Representative participation and compliance with human rights, including for children and minorities, are of great importance, according to a resolution that the most powerful UN body unanimously passed on Friday. The decision also extends the UN mission in Afghanistan by six months. The Unama Mission is responsible for coordinating political development and humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and also monitors compliance with human rights in the country.

The militant Islamist Taliban took power in Afghanistan in August. They recently introduced 33 members of the government, including no women and no one from any other political group. Western states had called for a so-called inclusive government to which not only the Taliban belong. Germany and the entire European Union even made this a condition for further commitment, for example for the payment of development aid.
