Islamization of Germany: First Hessian city allows permanent muezzin calls

The city of Raunheim was the first Hessian municipality to make the muezzin call a permanent institution. Every Friday the muezzin can call for up to four minutes for midday prayer, in the Muslim fasting month Ramadan even every day, the city council decided according to the Hessischer Rundfunk at the beginning of the week.

Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the two local mosque communities were initially allowed to call for Friday prayers by muezzin for a limited period of two years. According to the report, the fact that the permit has now been extended indefinitely is unique in Hesse. "Thus, the Muslims, who make up the largest population group in Raunheim, are on an equal footing with the Christians," said Mayor Thomas Jühe (SPD) to the broadcaster. It is estimated that 6,000 of the 16,000 inhabitants are Muslims. 5,000 Christians live in the city near Frankfurt Airport.

Compared to Cologne there was “never a problem” in Raunheim, added Jühe. In the city council, everyone was in agreement. "The approval of this application was made across all party lines." In addition to the time limit, the muezzin call must not exceed 95 decibels, which roughly corresponds to the noise of a passing subway train.

"Allah is great. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah"
At the beginning of October, Cologne started a model project limited to two years, according to which mosque communities can apply to call their believers to Friday prayers via loudspeaker. In the meantime, a first municipality has submitted an application , and there are also around a dozen expressions of interest.

Critics accuse Cologne's city government, among other things, of giving permission to support the policies of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In addition, the muezzin call cannot be compared to the ringing of church bells, because the muezzin call proclaims: “Allah is great. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Hasten to the Prayer."

At the beginning of the week, the candidate for the CDU chairmanship, Chancellery Minister Helge Braun, was open to allowing more muezzin calls in Germany. However, he considers a “renewed debate on the subject” to be “not expedient”.
