Planned attack: Hamburg police arrest suspected Islamist

Hamburg - Hamburg security authorities apparently prevented an Islamist terrorist attack. A 20-year-old Moroccan was arrested when he tried to buy a gun and a hand grenade on the Darknet, the police said on Friday, according to Der Spiegel.

The alleged terrorist therefore came under undercover agents. They pretended to enter into the trade and arrested him during the bogus handover. During a search, investigators found chemicals for building a bomb in the suspect's apartment.

Hamburg's Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) said it was a "very, very serious matter". The arrested Moroccan was known to investigators as an extended contact of the local Islamist scene. According to Der Spiegel, his father had contacts with an informant for the terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. The terrorists of 9-11 had temporarily lived in Hamburg.
