Germany: Baerbock wants to take in up to ten million Ukrainians

Berlin - Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has spoken out in favor of taking in up to ten million Ukrainian refugees. “We have to be prepared for eight to ten million refugees coming from the Ukraine. And we will take them all in," said the politician on Saturday at a party conference of the Greens in Brandenburg.

"Must" is actually the wrong word, because after all you want to help voluntarily. The situation is different from 2015 because a particularly large number of children are currently arriving in the country. East Germany in particular is suitable for taking in Ukrainians who have fled. The Foreign Minister explained that she also did not know how long the tense refugee situation would last. However, she hopes that one day they will again travel from the English Channel to Kazakhstan through a "free and peaceful Ukraine".

Faeser rejects the police registration of refugees
Meanwhile, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) spoke out against recording personal data of Ukrainians arriving in Germany. "We are talking primarily about children and women who have been on the run for days, who had to endure the cold at the Polish border." These should not be held up at the German border for control purposes, the minister said in Der Tagesspiegel.

Meanwhile, the number of people fleeing from Ukraine to Germany continued to rise. As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on Sunday, around 270,000 refugees have now arrived in Germany.
