Bremen wants to recognize climate change as a reason for asylum for refugees

Bremen's integration senator Anja Stahmann (Greens) has spoken out in favor of a change in the right to asylum, in which the possible consequences of climate change are recognized as a reason for fleeing. "Anyone who has to leave their homeland because of climate and environmental changes is currently not covered by protective instruments such as the Geneva Refugee Convention ," she explained, according to the dpa news agency.

According to the UN Human Rights Committee, migrants should not be refused admission if their life in their country of origin is threatened. By 2050, more than 200 million people are expected to leave their homes because of the consequences of climate change, Stahmann warned, citing figures from the United Nations.

The integration ministers of the federal states are meeting in Hamburg on Thursday and want to discuss the topic. Brandenburg and Bremen had previously submitted an application entitled "Recognize climate change as an obstacle to deportation".
