Energy crisis in Germany: first swimming pools lower water temperature

Nationwide, swimming pool visitors may have to prepare for colder water.

Berlin - In the course of rising energy prices, the first public pools have already lowered the water temperature by two degrees Celsius in individual pools, confirmed the German Society for Bathing (DGfdB) to the Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung (Saturday edition). Many other companies could follow. Other restrictions such as eliminating warm bathing days are also being discussed.

Should there be a Russian gas supply stop and rationing in Germany against the background of the Ukraine war, municipal bathrooms could even be completely closed. According to information from the NOZ, there are appropriate emergency plans for the first cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. "In order to be able to maintain basic operation of the pools, measures such as the closure of outdoor pools and slides as well as 'luxury offers' will have to be considered," said DGfdB Managing Director Christian Lack. There are around 7,000 public indoor and outdoor pools in Germany, most of which are heated with gas or district heating.

Around 1,000 pool operators are members of the umbrella organization DGfdB.
