Germany: fake police officers steal from Ukrainian refugee family

Bielefeld - Unknown persons posing as police officers stole from a Ukrainian refugee family during a fake traffic stop. The crime happened at the end of March on Autobahn 2 near Bielefeld, the police said.

The parents were on their way to the Gütersloh district with their children when a car overtook their van. The passenger held an ID card out of the window and motioned for the Ukrainians to pull over.

When the vehicles were there, the Southeast European-looking passenger asked the family to identify themselves. Since the Ukrainians assumed that a police check would be carried out by a civil patrol, they followed the instructions. The fake policeman then searched the van. After the suspect left with his accomplice, the fugitives found they were missing cash.

Police confirm more cases
When asked by JUNGE FREIHEIT, the police reported that this was not the first case in which bogus officials in the region used this scam to commit theft. They warns motorists to make sure that real police officers - even civilian patrols - have flashing lights and technical aids such as display boards with which they tell drivers to stop.

Also in North Rhine-Westphalia, an 18-year-old Ukrainian woman was the victim of a sex crime after fleeing the war. She was raped by two asylum seekers in a Düsseldorf accommodation in early March. The young woman is said to have fled to Poland because she no longer felt safe in Germany.
