Germany: Federal police register fake Ukrainian refugees

The federal police have noticed an increasing number of people attempting to enter the country who "pretend to be refugees in relation to the war in Ukraine".

Berlin - This is reported by Der Spiegel in its new issue. An internal memo from the beginning of April mentions 58 people who were refused entry, meanwhile there are said to be around 100, mainly on the German-Austrian border. These are both "Ukrainian nationals and third-country nationals who untruthfully claim to have previously stayed in Ukraine".

The officials were suspicious of groups who inquired directly about social benefits upon entry, but according to the federal police could not explain which Ukrainian place they were coming from. Dual nationals, for example, have Ukrainian ID documents, so these are not fakes. In some cases, however, the purchase receipts found referred to a stay outside the Ukraine, for example in Bulgaria or Romania.

In one case, a man is said to have presented a Ukrainian residence permit for himself, but only birth certificates for a good dozen children. In this case, it was unclear whether the children were in Ukraine. In the meantime, fewer refugees are arriving, which is why the number of such apprehensions by the federal police has also fallen significantly.
