Germany: Greens want to strengthen civil defense "massively and permanently"

In view of the perceived increase in the military threat in Europe, the Greens are calling for civil defense in Germany to be significantly strengthened.

Berlin - "In the course of the 'peace dividend', civil defense was massively reduced and is also being neglected in the current debates," said the parliamentary secretary of the Greens, Irene Mihalic, to the Handelsblatt. "Now is the time to correct this mistake and to strengthen civil defense massively and permanently." The Greens politician Mihalic advocated an "efficient" Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK), reliable warning devices and a comprehensive provision of medical protective goods.

"We also have to organize the aid organizations, fire brigades and technical relief organization even better," she explained. At the same time, Mihalic emphasized that a "substantial strengthening of civil defense cannot be had for free". But every investment makes sense and will also be available to deal with natural disasters such as floods.
