Von der Leyen wants a speedy statement on Ukraine's EU accession

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wants to drastically accelerate a possible accession process for Ukraine.

Brussels - The opinion and recommendation of the European Commission on accession would usually take years, "here we are working for weeks, at full speed," von der Leyen said on Saturday ARD "Tagesthemen". In the debate on aid for Ukraine, the President of the European Commission said that during her visit yesterday, the President of Ukraine told her "there has to be more, you have to be braver". But it is important to "impose sanctions that hurt Russia more than us".

The first step towards Ukraine's admission to the EU has now been taken "quicker than is usual". President Zelenskyi told her, "if the Ukrainian soldiers die here, they at least want to know that their children will later be free and in the European Union". Von der Leyen described her visit to the city of Butscha as "deeply oppressive".
