Germany: Interior Ministry wants to take a maximum of 5,000 Afghans per year
Berlin/Kabul - This is reported Der Spiegel, citing a letter from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to parliamentarians. It states that this number is expected to be "operationally feasible". The federal government agreed the program in the coalition agreement.
It is aimed at people who are in danger after the Taliban take power, such as journalists or, in particular, female teachers. For the first time, figures are now known - and harbor the potential for conflict. "Civil society organizations such as the 'Kabul Airlift' have supported 3,000 people alone and report tens of thousands of people at risk," said Julian Pahlke, member of the Green Bundestag.
The families of those at risk would also have to be taken in. Discussions are being held with the BMI about the magnitude of the program. Apparently there is also a discussion about who should count as a family member.
Depending on how you define it, the program could total more than 100,000 people. On request, the Federal Ministry of the Interior stated that the core elements of the program were currently being coordinated.
